Revitalize Your Deck or Patio with a Spring Cleaning for outdoor enjoyment or sale of your home.

As the winter fades away and the sun begins to shine brighter and longer, it's time to turn our attention to the outdoors and do some Spring cleaning! One essential area that often requires attention and often gets neglected is our decks. Whether you're gearing up for lazy summer afternoons or outdoor gatherings, giving your deck a good cleaning will not only enhance its appearance but also extend its lifespan. Here are some of the best ways to clean your deck and bring it back to its former glory.

1. Clear the Deck

This may seem pretty obvious, but before diving into cleaning, start by removing all furniture, planters, and any other items from your deck. Sweep away leaves, debris, and dirt using a broom or leaf blower. Clearing the deck allows you to get a good idea of its condition and ensures a more thorough cleaning.

Deck Cleaning2. Inspect and Repair

Take the time to inspect your deck for any signs of damage such as loose boards, popped nails, or splintered wood. Replace or repair any damaged pieces to ensure the deck is safe and stable before cleaning.

3. Choose the Right Cleaning Solution

The cleaning method you choose will depend on the type of deck you have—whether it's wood, composite, or another material. Here are a few effective cleaning solutions:

  • For Wood Decks: Use a deck cleaner specifically formulated for wood. Avoid using bleach as it can damage the wood fibers. Instead, opt for oxygen bleach-based cleaners which are safer for the environment. I've used Oxy-Clean mixed with water and it has done a great job. A good medium stiffness brush on a handle well help to effectively clean the wood grain and gaps.

  • For Composite Decks: Mild dish soap and water are usually sufficient for cleaning composite decks. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the surface. You'll want to use a soft to medium stiffness bush on a handle to effectively clean the decking.

  • For concrete patios:  For concrete patios you will want to follow the same general procedures as above. Soap and water will usually do the job. However, there are concrete cleaning solvents that you can purchase at your local home supply store.

4. Scrub Away Dirt and Stains

Armed with a (medium) bristled brush and a pressure washer (Important: set to a gentle setting for wood decks), scrub the deck surface using your chosen cleaning solution. Work in small sections, and pay extra attention to high-traffic areas and spots with stains. For stubborn stains like grease or mildew, you may need to use a specialized cleaner or a vinegar solution. Vinegar is a great all-purpose cleaner. Rinse the deck as you clean.

5. Rinse Thoroughly

Once you've scrubbed the entire deck, thoroughly rinse off the cleaning solution using a garden hose or pressure washer. Make sure all cleaning residues are washed away to prevent any potential damage or discoloration. Now, give the decking time to thoroughly dry. Keep pets and people off while it dries and, if possible, until you have added the stain or sealer.

6. Apply Protective Finish

After the deck has dried completely, consider applying a protective finish such as a deck stain or sealant. This not only enhances the deck's appearance but also helps to protect it from the sun's UV rays, moisture, and foot traffic.

7. Add the Finishing Touches

Once your deck is clean and protected, bring back your outdoor furniture and decorations. Consider adding potted plants, outdoor rugs, or string lights to create a welcoming and cozy outdoor space. (If selling your home, this will add the feel of added outdoor living space.

Maintenance Tips

To keep your deck looking its best throughout the year, here are some maintenance tips:

  • Regularly sweep or rinse off debris.
  • Promptly clean up spills to prevent staining.
  • Trim nearby vegetation to prevent mold and mildew growth.
  • Inspect and repair your deck as required.

PLEASE USE CAUTION when using products purchased from a store. Some products may be caustic and cause harm to yourself, others or your pets. Read all warning labels prior to usage and make sure they are suitable for your intended use. Never mix chemicals or cleaning solvents unless it is expressly stated to do so in the directions. Only use cleaning products as stated on the label or in the directions.

With these spring cleaning tips, your deck will be ready to host memorable gatherings (or sale of your home) and provide a relaxing outdoor retreat for the warmer months ahead. Take the time now to give your deck the attention it deserves, and you'll enjoy its benefits for years to come.
